The competition entry LEGO is based on a modular system. Various floor plans can be combined to create different types of apartment buildings. This allows for flexible apartment structures and variations ranging from rational (cuboid) to less rational (stepped) forms. It is possible to create building types tailored to the required apartment sizes.
In terms of planning, parking spaces are placed under the buildings, creating a central community courtyard. The community courtyard is the greatest asset for the street-facing buildings, offering views of greenery. Additionally, the inner courtyard can accommodate safer, kitchen-window-overlooked playgrounds.
The entrances to the street-facing buildings are located along Rääma Street. Each building has a small forecourt connected to a paved path leading to the riverside, without crossing any roads. The forecourts of the riverside buildings open into the green inner courtyard, providing access to both the building and the riverside. The courtyards are connected to riverside and central courtyard functions, such as playgrounds and community gardens.
Thanks to the stepped floor plan, all riverside apartments are guaranteed views of the river. Even apartments facing the inner courtyard are ensured a view of the river through openings between the riverside buildings.
